UK Parliamentary Election – 4 July 2024

An election is to be held to appoint a Member of the UK Parliament. Polling will take place between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 4 July 2024.

Voters are legally required to show photo ID when voting at a polling station at this election.

      • Week commencing 10 June 2024


    Deadline for applications to be included on the Register of Electors for this election

        • Midnight on Tuesday 18 June 2024

      To vote in the UK Parliamentary election you must be:

          • Registered to vote

          • a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen

          • aged 18 or over on the day of the election

        You can go online to register to vote – it only takes five minutes.


        Deadline for applications to vote by post or to change/cancel existing postal voting or proxy arrangements

            • 5pm Wednesday 19 June 2024

          You can apply for a postal vote online. If you cannot apply online, download and fill in a postal vote application form and send it to Lothian Valuation Joint Board, 17A South Gyle Crescent, Edinburgh, EH12 9FL.

          Before making an application you’ll need:

              • your National Insurance number or other identity documents, for example a passport

            You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.

            If you cannot provide a signature or one that always looks the same, you may be able to apply for a postal vote signature waiver within the online service.


            Deadline for new applications to vote by proxy

                • 5pm Wednesday 26 June 2024

              You can apply for a proxy vote online. If you cannot apply online, download and fill in a proxy vote application form and send it to Lothian Valuation Joint Board, 17A South Gyle Crescent, Edinburgh, EH12 9FL.

              Before making an application you’ll need:

                  • your National Insurance number or any other identity document, for example a birth certificate

                  • the address where your proxy is registered to vote

                You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.

                If you cannot provide a signature or one that always looks the same, you may be able to apply for a proxy vote signature waiver within the online service.

                * If the circumstances leading to the requirement for a proxy vote occurred after 5pm Wednesday 26 June you can apply for an emergency proxy vote. Application forms are available on our website HERE


                Deadline for new applications for Voter Authority Certificates

                    • 5pm Wednesday 26 June 2024

                  You only need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate if:

                      • you do not have accepted photo ID

                      • you no longer look like the photo on your ID

                      • the name on your photo ID is different to your name on the electoral register

                    If the name on your photo ID is different, you can register to vote again or take a document with you to vote that proves that you have changed your name.

                    Postal ballot paper issue date

                        • Ballot papers may be delivered as late as 7 days before polling day.
